Grandin Hall’s brick wall bordering 146th Street and along the main entrance is arguably our neighborhood
’s most architecturally-distinguishing feature. Unfortunately, the wall is in need of some structural repairs to maintain its appearance and structural integrity.
The street side wall, main entrance wall, and the seat wall around the Hall is approximately 1.1 miles of brick with 83 pillars. Over the last 13 years, bricks and joints have broken, pillars have cracked and the ledges that rest atop the bricks have been displaced by freezing and thawing expansion. This project aims to repair all of that damage. All of the surfaces will also be power washed and the masonry surfaces will be sealed to extend the life of the walls and postpone future repairs for up to 10 years.
After securing three competitive bids, the project was awarded to Shackekford Masonry, an established local company with good references. The project will be paid with reserves and will be completed in two phases. Download a map of the two phases.
The first phase of the repairs will begin around July 23 and is expected to take up to three weeks to complete. Phase one repairs will involve the following:
Power wash all masonry surfaces
Repair water table joints in the pillars
Remove and replace spalled brick
Repair cracked pillars
Reset stone step treads
Grind head joints in wall coping; replace with backer rod and silicone sealant at approximately 300 joints
Perform miscellaneous tuck pointing
Phase One Total – $19,530
Phase two of the project, which includes the following, will be scheduled as phase one progresses:
Power wash all masonry surfaces
Repair approximately 41 stress cracks
Repair joints on pillar water tables
Perform miscellaneous tuck pointing
Grind head joints in wall coping; replace with backer rod and silicone sealant at approximately 240 joints
Phase Two Total – $24,570
